The Absolute Best Star Trek Movie by Trevor Allmanson

Many of my friends and co-workers know that I am a huge fan of the Star Trek series. Im not a true trekkie in that I dont go to conventions, nor do I own a Star Trek Uniform, but I do own all the movies and television series on DVD. So when it comes to the Star Trek universe, I have a bit of knowledge.

I enjoy all the movies, except perhaps, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. As you would expect, the effects are better in the later movies, and I think the dialog and characters are more evolved in the TNG movies. (TNG = Star Trek, The Next Generation for those who dont know.) Factoring in dialog, effects, and plot, my favorite Trek movie would have to be Star Trek First Contact. It opens with Captain Picard having a nightmare about his Borg assimilation. When he wakes, he learns that the Borg have attacked the Federation, but because of his history, he and the Enterprise are ordered far from the battle. This sets them up to come into the battle as the good guys are losing and help the Federation destroy the Borg ships. However, one sphere manages to get away by opening a temporal vortex allowing them to travel into the past. Enterprise rushed to follow to prevent Earth from being assimilated in the past which would destroy their future.

Personally, I find the whole time travel thing to be entertaining to watch, but its really one of those plot lines that force me to suspend my reality. If I think about it too much it irritates me that only the Federation can truly manage to get a positive outcome whenever they time travel. You would think that the Borg, who have the technology to create temporal vortexes would have an advantage over the Federation who just tag along for the ride. But whenever a Federation ship manages to go back in time, the captain and crew of that vessel always come out ahead of whatever enemy they are fighting. Its just not realistic. But then again, is time travel realistic? And do we actually watch movies like this for realism or entertainment. But I digress

And in the movies you are supposed to sit back and take in whats being presented to you. Besides, the time travel plot line allows for the interpersonal dynamics which make this movie such an enjoyable one for me. When the crew of the Enterprise find themselves in orbit around 21st century earth, they realize they are witnessing pre-warp earth. General Federation guidelines dictate that there is to be no First Contact with any pre-warp species. It is only once a civilization has been able to attain warp speed flight that they are deemed evolved enough to be contacted by the Federation of Planets. In this movie, the Borg intend to prevent First Contact between Vulcans and humans by destroying the first warp-capable space ship.

Now in the 21st century, the Enterprise destroys the Borg sphere, but only after the Borg have already disabled the Phoenix, the first warp-capable ship. On the surface of the earth we meet Lily, assistant to Zefram Cochrane, inventor of warp drive, and creator of the Phoenix. Lily is suffering from radiation poisoning and so she is beamed to sick-bay for treatment aboard the Enterprise.

For me, one of the more fun plot lines in the movie is watching the crew of the Enterprise meet a hero from their childhood. Theyve all studied Zefram Cochrane. Some of them have gone to Zefram Cochrane High School. This man is a larger than life character in their personal histories and they have a chance to meet him. (Dont forget, hes long dead in their timeline.) Of course, history has been kind to him. He is nothing like the man he has been portrayed to have been. And he is rather freaked out by the idea that he becomes a revered historical figure. He considers himself a regular guy.

Back on Enterprise we discover that as the Borg sphere was being destroyed some Borg beamed themselves aboard the Enterprise. A struggle breaks out for control of the Enterprise and we agonize with Picard as he struggles with the decision to destroy the Enterprise.

The dialog between Lily and Picard is particularly good. We are used to seeing Captain Picard as a strong man who operates with cool logic. Here we see him have an emotional outburst. He exclaims, I will make them pay for what theyve done. Lily is able to question Picard as his staff cannot. With all their history together Picard and the crew of the Enterprise trust and respect each other. Lily is able to bring an objective pair of eyes to assess the situation.

Perhaps the most entertaining scene in the movie comes as Data is being tempted by the Borg queen to add his distinctiveness to their collective. She has given him a bit of grafted skin on his forearm, skin that allows him to feel, the thing Data wants more than anything. One of my favorite lines in the movie comes when Data is grappling with the idea of ripping the skin off his arm, the Borg queen says to him, Do it! Dont be tempted by the flesh! We truly dont know what Data will decide to do.

As you might expect, the Borg lose out and once again the Enterprise saves the day, and the future, or the past. Depending on where in history you are. The movie may be formulaic, but its great fun. The cast works well together after all this time, and are believable in their situations/roles. The plot is well written and enjoyable. Definitely my favorite of all the movies to date.
